Science

Science Toys

Children love learning by doing, and that is the philosophy behind the Maker Movement. Have a look at their ideas and tools to make science and mathematics interesting and fun.

  • Squishy Circuits use play dough to build electronic sculptures that light up, make sounds and move!
  • 50 Things you can do with a cardboard box as the name suggests, encourages children (parents, teachers) to use cardboard boxes that would otherwise end up as landfill, to create things such as musical instruments, dolls houses and puppets.

Technology

App List

  • Craig Smith, deputy principal at Aspect Hunter School in NSW, has put together a useful collection of iPad Apps for students on the autism spectrum to help with communication, social skills, emotional regulation and academic work. The iPad App Toolbox for Special Education has practical information about each app that schools can use to engage with students with disability.

Robotics and Coding

  • From 2016, all students in Queensland State schools will learn robotics and coding. With 75% of all future jobs being STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) related, this will help students prepare for future employment.

Digital Tools

  • Here is a great blog on digital tools to build literacy.  The link to this resource is also located alongside our video program, Using Academic Vocabulary.

Minecraft

  • The short video, The Craft Digital Citizens, shows how to use Minecraft to make mathematics relevant and engaging to 21st Century learners who are growing up in a rapidly changing digital era. There are many other videos on using Minecraft for mathematics on sites like YouTube.

Assistive Technology

Technology Tools for Students with Disability

Do you use assistive technology to support students with learning disabilities? The Great Schools website shows how assistive technology tools can help children to play on their strengths and work around challenges. There are links to a range of technology tools that can help students with listening, math, organisation and memory, and reading and writing.
