The Science of School Mental Health and Wellbeing Check-ins

The recording of this webinar is available in the Professional Development library, under Learning and Wellbeing.

Standard 1.2 Engage with students to establish positive and respectful relationships.

Standard 3.1 Communicate with teachers to support planning for student learning and wellbeing.

Dr Lauren McLellan, Director at My Mind Check, shares the science behind school mental health and wellbeing check-ins. Young people commonly experience mental health concerns - 1 in 7 have a mental health diagnosis. But 89% don’t get the help they need. One way to improve these statistics is to help identify mental health concerns early. With funding from the BUPA Foundation, Macquarie University conducted research to develop and evaluate a mental health check in tool for school students in Australia. We have now partnered with the Australian Government Department of Education to further develop and roll out a free, online, voluntary mental health check tool, My Mind Check, for schools and their students across Australia. My Mind Check help schools quickly and proactively identify students who may be struggling with mental health and wellbeing and share information with them and their families. This presentation provides an overview of the research behind My Mind Check, the development of the National product and how schools can use it.
