EXAMPLE C1: Positive impact on student learning and wellbeing

Ima easily develops rapport and trust with students, and is recognised for her outstanding ability to support learning, particularly in reading and numeracy intervention. Students look forward to working with Ima, and teachers and parents regularly comment on her natural ability to instil confidence, break down challenging tasks to make them achievable, and instil a love of learning.

  • Ima works collaboratively with two learning support teachers to lead the literacy intervention program. Every morning, Ima supports small groups of Year 3 - 5 students with reading, phonics and spelling. The progress of these students has been outstanding, and last year, 80% of the students who received literacy intervention, progressed two or more reading levels in 12 months
  • Ima gets to know students’ strengths and interests and adapts her approach to suit individual learning preferences. For example, Ima worked with a Year 6 student who was struggling with mathematics. Ima engaged the student by drawing on his love of ruby league to learn about perimeter, angles and area. As a result, the student’s numeracy skills improved significantly and he now participates in the classroom with confidence
  • It was Ima’s initiative to start a music extension program, and what initially started out as a small lunch time activity for students with poor social skills, has developed into a whole school event, with an annual concert held in the community
